Misconceptions about Homoeopathy

Dr. Rajneesh Kumar Sharma

In the present era after getting fed up with the unwanted effects and reactions of the so called modern medicine, a large number of people are seen converting towards Homoeopathy in prospect that Homoeopathic medicines are safer and cause no or little side effects. There are still numerous false notions that hinder the acceptance of Homoeopathy in general public.

(Viz.- Homoeopathic medicines act very slowly; the treatment takes longer time; the Homoeopathic medicines do not act on drunkards, smokers, people of sedentary habits; in acute cases it is better to take allopathic treatment first and when there is some relief, Homoeopathic treatment may be started, all other treatments must be stopped with Homoeopathic treatment etc. etc.).

We often come to know about the people making such comments; and such comments are not always based on mere imagination. These comments are often from their bitter experience. Very often, some people say that Homoeopathic medicines do not act upon them. Such pitiable fellows have taken Homoeopathic treatment for months or more at a stretch, but could not find relief in the least.

When such comments come into notice they compel one to cudgel his mind, who is responsible for creating all such false notions?

After reflecting seriously on all such comments, I reached the conclusion that the fault is from both the sides, Homoeopathic physician and the patient.

Drawbacks from the Physician's part

Homoeopathic physicians themselves are solely responsible. This responsibility is multi pronged. Let us ask ourselves a few questions seriously and honestly:

(1) Do we have ourselves virtuous certitude in this esteemed system of healing by similia i.e. Homoeopathy? (Faith)

(2) Do we have learned principles of this healing art as laid down by the masters of Homoeopathy? (Organon of medicine)

(3) Do we correctly interpret-
(a) the personalities of the individuals with respect to their healthy state,
(b) change in personality of each individual under the influence of each individual disease and
(c) The change in personality of each individual under the influence of each individual drug? (Theory of Individualization)

(4) Do we dare to put forth efforts to choose proper remedy according to its adaptability to the disease personality as per discipline of the Homoeopathy? (Law of Similimum)

(5) Do we know about the sources of drug substances, methods of preparation of the medicines and about the proper doses? (Pharmacy and Pharmacology)

(6) Do we know how to decide precisely when to repeat the dose? (Posology)

(7) Do we know how to properly decide when it is proper time for the second prescription? (Second prescription)

(8) Do we keep proper record of each individual patient so that we may keep proper track on the progress and the changes taking place under our concern of each individual patient? (Record Keeping)

(9) Do we know how to ascertain general condition of the patient regarding his need for supplements like vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, fluids etc. and how to balance them in emergency? (Supplementation Therapy)

(10) Do we understand how to manage the case, with respect to the mode of diet, mode of living and the precautions to be observed so that the recovery may be faster? (Diet and regimen)

Drawbacks from the Patient's part:

The patient is not( always faithful with physician. Here some questions can be put out to conclude-

(1) Does the patient have full faith in treating physician?

(2) Is the patient satisfied with qualification and achievements of the physician?

(3) Is the patient able to understand his sufferings well and correctly interprets them in words so that the physician may make clear and right picture of the sufferings of the patient in his mind?

(4) Is the language of the patient intelligible and palatable to the physician?

(5) Is the patient fair and reveals all the facts and secrets about the sufferings to the physician?

(6) Does the patient inform correctly about his past and family history?

(7) Does the patient follows the instructions of the doctor faithfully and take the medicine punctually as per advice of the physician and follow dietary restrictions if any?

(8) Does the patient make punctual and regular follow-ups?

These are some important ones among myriad other questions, which require immense fascination to increase ones expertise in science of Homoeopathy.

Requisite knowledge of the Physician:

Now, again an inquisition arises, "Do we make acquaintance with our remedies so well? This will need basic but essential requirements to be a perfect physician. This will require hard toil. A sixteen-hour per day study of Organon, Materia Medica and Repertory, with condition that the entire basic, all the allied, and all the essential subjects have been already well studied and acquainted.

These basic, allied and essential subjects include Medical Ethics, Philosophy, Zoology, Botany, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Ecology, Sociology and Languages (Local, Regional and International). The allied and essentials include Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Surgery, Pathology, Forensic Medicine, Preventive and Social Medicine, Gynecology, Obstetrics, Practice of Medicine and Clinical Classes in various departments of Medicine and Surgery. All these subjects are inter- woven and work simultaneously to make investigations, diagnosis, prognosis, and prescription.

Dr. George Vithoulkas says-
"Homoeopathy is a living dynamic science and can be effective only if it becomes a living pulsating knowledge within the mind and heart of the practicing Homoeopath."

Apart from this, clinical experience makes the doctor more confident, more prompt and more competent in practice and thus creating certitude for Homoeopathy in the hearts of the suffering people and the general public so that this science cum art of healing may indisputably become the surer, safer and the most popular system of CURE of imminent future.

Further, he should know the dietary factors, which influence our health as well as disease states.
